2015.3 / 6.3 - is it safe to upgrade?

Last week, Adobe released the 2015.3 / 6.3 update, which brings back the original Import dialog, fixes various bugs introduced in the previous release, and adds a lot of new cameras and lenses. Click here for the full details.

People have been understandably hesitant to upgrade, but the good news is, it's looking pretty stable.  There are always some small bugs - that's the nature of software development - but we're back to a 'normal' level of bugs.

The main issues being reported are:

  • A couple of reports of problems installing, fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling from the CC app, or these links - 6.0 then 6.3 (Win/Mac).
  • A few people getting "Sequencer defunct" error on Windows, solution here.
  • A few people getting an ‘error changing modules’ trying to open Slideshow. Windows solution here, Mac fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling.
  • A few people having issues importing videos on Windows, solution here
  • Some memory cards are showing in the Files section of the Import dialog instead of the Devices section, and are therefore missing the Eject checkbox. The photos still import correctly and the card can be ejected manually.
  • Nikon tethering is still not working on El Capitan. This is waiting on an SDK update from Nikon.

Tip of the month

Smart Collections are like saved searches or smart folders, automatically updating as photos meet, or stop meeting, the criteria you choose. If you haven't used them before, you'll find the basics on page 58-59 in my free LR CC/6 Quick Start eBook.

But if you're a power user, have you tried nesting criteria? If you hold down Alt (Windows) / Opt (Mac) while clicking on the + button at the end of a row, you can fine-tune your criteria further with conditional rules, which show as indented rows. Each of these conditional rules has its own All/Any/None pop-up, so the combinations are endless.
