Are you still reading? More Lightroom updates

Hi Lightroom!

I haven't heard from you in a while. I want to make sure my email newsletter includes just the right information for you, so I'm running a survey. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

If you're not interested in Lightroom anymore, that's absolutely fine.  If you don't click on any of the links in this email, I'll remove you from the list automatically to save you unsubscribing (although I'll miss you!)

I'd love it if you decide to stick around.  I only usually email about once a month, so your inbox won't overflow. And as a special "welcome back" gift, I've set up a special 10% discount code WELCOMEBACK which you can use against any of my books.

In this edition of the newsletter...

  • I need your help
  • Lightroom 2015.5.1 and Lightroom 6.5.1 Update
  • Lightroom mobile for iOS version 2.3
  • Are you scared of messing up your Lightroom catalog?
  • Animate Slideshow Integration

I need your help!

My aim is to create content that answers your Lightroom questions, helps you to avoid problems, and allows you to enjoy photography.

To do that well, I need to know more about you!

That's why I'm inviting you to take my 2016 Reader Survey.

Would you do me a favor and complete the survey? It should take less than five minutes.

When you do, you're ultimately helping yourself. Why? Because you'll be guiding me to create content that's even more interesting and relevant to you.

Your input is important to me. The survey is easy to fill out, and the results are completely anonymous, unless you choose to leave your email address.

Thank you so much!

Lightroom 2015.5.1 and Lightroom 6.5.1 Update

Adobe has just issued an update to Lightroom, which fixes the missing lens metadata bug, among others. You'll find all of the information in my blog post, including step-by-step instructions on how to fix photos that are missing their lens metadata and the direct download links.

Lightroom mobile for iOS version 2.3

Version 2.3 of the iOS app has also gone live today, with a couple of tweaks that make it easier to edit a photo without first importing it. I'll be updating the mobile eBook shortly for the changes, but in the meantime, you can read more about it in Adobe's blog post.

Are you scared of messing up your Lightroom catalog?

Many people are secretly scared of their Lightroom catalog. You too?  Don't worry, you're not alone! After all, if you make a mistake, you can lose all of the work you've done for years!

There isn't anything to worry about, as long as you follow some simple instructions:

The first thing is to know where it's stored, but Lightroom's Catalog Settings dialog will tell you that. Go and check that now. If the folder path contains the word Backups, you're probably best to move it, otherwise you might accidentally delete it when you're clearing out old backups.

Next, make sure you back it up regularly.  I can't emphasize that enough.  Really, it's important! And don't forget to back up your photos and presets too.  They're not backed up as part of Lightroom's catalog backup routine.

If you need to move it or rename it to make it easier to identify, make sure you move/rename the previews at the same time

And if you need to move your photos to another hard drive, make sure you fix Lightroom's broken links at the same time, while you can still remember where you put them.

If your photos are marked as missing, never ever use the Synchronize Folder command.  You may regret it!  In fact, avoid that command altogether until you've learned exactly what each option does. (That's on page 128-129 in my Lightroom CC/6 book, if you're wondering.)

Even moving to a new computer doesn't need to be scary if you follow the step-by-step instructions.

And the last thing to avoid... if you do get into a muddle, don't ask a general computer technician or geeky friend to fix it.  Find a Lightroom expert or post it on the forums so experienced users can help.  You'd be amazed how often "helping" creates a bigger mess.

Animoto Slideshow Integration

Do you ever get frustrated by the limitations of Lightroom's Slideshow module? If you create lots of slideshows, you might like to take a look at Animoto. They already offer a Lightroom plug-in, but recently they announced integration with the Lightroom Sync cloud. With your permission, they can now access the collections of photos you've already uploaded to Lightroom's cloud.

Even if you're not interested in slideshows, it's an interesting development for Adobe's cloud services... Adobe's mobile apps, such as Voice and Slate can already access the photos in your Lightroom catalog, but imagine being able to access your photos directly from your favorite online lab's website to order prints, or your favorite book printer's design tool.

Talk again soon, and thanks again for taking the time to complete my survey!
